Some of students will be tourists and other will be guides.

Teacher: “Good morning, students. Glad to see you. How’s your mood? Today we are going to have an unusual lesson it’ll be a trip to our hometown. We will learn useful information about our city and interesting places”.

Teacher: “First, let’s watch a short video about our city”.

Video: “History of the city of Ulan-Ude”. (Source YouTube)

Teacher: “So, dear students, let’s get on our bus and go on a journey through our city!”

Student 1 (act as a guide): ” Welcome to our city. Now I would like to tell you about the history of my city.”

“Ulan-Ude was founded in 1666 on the right bank of the Selenga River at the confluence of the Uda River. It is a cultural, religious, educational and historical center of Western Transbaikalia. Until 1934, Ulan-Ude was called Verkhneudinsk, under this name it is found in literature, historical essays and memoirs of prominent people of the 18th and 19th centuries. In Ulan-Ude, two religions – Orthodoxy and Buddhism-coexist peacefully, the city is multi-ethnic, bright and original”.

Student 2: “And our first stop is the Buryat State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. The Buryat Opera House was built in 1952 by Japanese prisoners of war. The monumental building, whose main hall accommodates 800 spectators, is located on the main square of Ulan-Ude. It is decorated in the Empire style with the inclusion of original elements of oriental architecture”

“Why to visit? The theater hosts operas and other productions by Buryat, Russian and foreign authors. When visiting, pay attention to the interior of the building – the luxurious ceiling of the main hall with a large chandelier, the floor of polished marble, the original portal of the stage. The area in front of the theater is well suited for walking: you can appreciate the interesting architecture of the building and look at the light and music fountain.”

Student 2: “Please get back on the bus, we’re going to the next place”.

Student 3: “And our next stop is the area of the Soviets. Soviets Square is considered the main one in the city, it has several attractions at once. Walking around the square, you can see the House of Soviets-an example of the architectural style of constructivism. Next to it, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks is the Lenin Monument. The monument is non-standard: instead of the usual full-length figure, only the head is installed on the pedestal. The monument has an impressive size — the height of the bronze head is about 8 meters, the pedestal is 6 meters”.

Student 4: “Our last stop is Ivolginsky datsan. Datsan is located about 40 km from Ulan-Ude, in the village of Verkhnyaya Ivolga. Permission for its construction was obtained in 1945, and today the temple complex consists of many buildings – both religious and economic and administrative”.

“You can explore the temples in the Buddhist style, visit the museum with historical exhibits. Next to the datsan there is a stadium where competitions in traditional wrestling, archery and other disciplines are held”

Student 1: “Our tour is over. I hope you were interested and learned a lot of new things”.

Teacher: “Thank you for a very interesting tour!” “Now let’s conduct a small survey”

Survey “How well do you know your city”

  1. What are the two religions in Ulan-Ude?
  2. In what year Ulan-Ude was founded?
  3. Which building is built in the Empire style?
  4. What monument is located on the Soviet Square?
  5. What is the height of this monument?
  6. Where is the Ivolginsky datsan located?

Conclusion

Teacher: “Students, I’m very pleased with your work today. You worked hard. You are great. Thank you. Good luck!
