WE ARE THE GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN OF VICTORY

— In Russia Victory Day, or the 9th of May, is one of the greatest holidays in our country.

-In all towns and cities there are decorations, flags and placards in the streets, in the shop windows and on the front of large buildings.

  • On Victory Day morning there are also meetings and demonstrations of the veterans who were fighting in the Great Patriotic War.
  • On this day there is a military parade in all big cities of Russia.
  • Flowers and souvenirs are given to those who took part in the Great Patriotic War.
  • There are a lot of people in the streets and squares, at theatres, cinemas and concert halls. They are celebrating the holiday. Many people go to see their friends or go for walks to the parks.
  • In the evening there is a holiday salute and a minute of silence to remember all those who did not come back from the war.
  • Let’s have an excursion on the roads of the Great Patriotic war and see how the Soviet soldiers won the victory on May 1945.
  • Look at the map, here there are the main battles of the Great Patriotic War. First, let’s speak about the battle of Moscow.
  • In the beginning of December 1941, the Soviet people and their armed forces were faced with an extremely important military and political task: to liquidate the threat to Moscow. Despite the limited number of troops and weapons, insufficient industrial output, failures in the preceding engagements, and a severe winter with an excessive snowfall, the Party, the government, and the Soviet command were able to mobilize and concentrate a maximum number of troops and weapons along the decisive axes of operations and to prepare the troops from the point of view of morale to pass from defensive to offensive actions. In the Battle of Moscow, the Soviet troops, for the first time during the entire war, inflicted a great defeat on the fascist German Army and dispelled the myth of its invincibility. The enemy suffered heavy losses in manpower and material; 38 enemy divisions were smashed in the Battle of Moscow. The Red Army victory at Moscow was of enormous political and military significance. It marked a decisive turn in military events in favor of the USSR and had a great impact on the whole subsequent course of the Great Patriotic War and World War II.

— The second point of destination is the battle of Stalingrad. The situation by the second half of November 1942 remained extremely tense along the whole front. The Battle of Stalingrad was the greatest battle of the entire Second World War and was a major victory of the Soviet people and their armed forces. During the Battle of Stalingrad, the enemy lost 1.5 million men, 800,000 of whom were lost during the counteroffensive; more than 10,000 guns and infantry mortars; up to 2,000 tanks and assault guns; and about 2,000 combat and transport planes. Owing to this great victory, the strategic initiative was wrested from the enemy’s hands once and for all; the mass expulsion of the enemy from Soviet territory was begun. The victory at Stalingrad had enormous international significance.

The next place is the battle of Kursk. The Red Army victory at Kursk signified the complete collapse of the German High Command’s offensive strategy and the completion of the radical turning point of the Great Patriotic War. In 50 days of uninterrupted combat, 30 divisions, including seven panzer divisions, were destroyed, and the fascist German army lost more than 500,000 men. The Battle of Kursk, along with the battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, was one of the major phases on the Soviet Union’s road to victory in the Great Patriotic War. The strategic initiative that the Red Army had seized in Stalingrad was totally consolidated.

  • The tragic events of the Second world war did not pass by our town. Our fellow citizens went to war, among them our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

— We can’t help dropping a word about the battle on the Dnieper. Between September 26 and November 5, in the course of the Melitopol’ Operation, the troops of the Southern Front reached the lower banks of the Dnieper River and Perekop and began preparations for the liberation of the Crimea. During the Novorossiisk-Taman’ Operation in September and October 1943, the troops of the Northern Caucasus Front and the Black Sea Fleet liberated Novorossiisk on September 16 and completely cleared the Taman’ peninsula by October 10.

On April 28 the enemy’s Berlin grouping was split into three parts. On April 30, Soviet troops took the Reichstag by storm and hoisted the Banner of Victory on it. On May 2 the remnants of the Berlin garrison capitulated. During the Berlin Operation the Soviet troops completely routed 93 enemy divisions, took about 480,000 prisoners, and captured 1,550 tanks, 8,600 guns, and 4,510 aircraft. The completion of the Berlin Operation signified the final rout of fascist Germany and its armed forces. On May 8,1945, representatives of the German High Command signed the act of Germany’s unconditional surrender in Karlkchorst (a suburb of Berlin).

— The victory in the Great Patriotic War was won by Soviet people in the name of peace and life on Earth.

Young generations know about the Great Patriotic War only from books and films. Millions of people died during the great Patriotic war. In our country every family has lost relatives.

«Жди меня» стихотворение Константина Симонова

Translated by Mike Munford -

« Wait for me «

Wait for me, and I’ll come back!

Wait with all you’ve got!

Wait, when dreary yellow rains

Tell you, you should not.

Wait when snow is falling fast,

Wait when summer’s hot,

Wait when yesterdays are past,

Others are forgot.

Wait, when from that far-off place,

Letters don’t arrive.

Wait, when those with whom you wait

Doubt if I’m alive

Wait for me, and I’ll come back!

Wait in patience yet

When they tell you off by heart

That you should forget.

Even when my dearest ones

Say that I am lost,

Even when my friends give up,

Sit and count the cost,

Drink a glass of bitter wine

To the fallen friend —

Wait! And do not drink with them!

Wait until the end!

Wait for me and I’ll come back,

Dodging every fate!

«What a bit of luck!» they’ll say,

Those that would not wait.

They will never understand

How amidst the strife,

By your waiting for me, dear,

You had saved my life.

Only you and I will know

How you got me through.

Simply — you knew how to wait —

No one else but you.

The price of Victory was very high. Over 26 million Soviet people were killed, about 2000 cities were destroyed. But the Soviet people won the Great Patriotic War against a powerful enemy. The great war of liberation fought by our people against Nazism ended with total victory. And now we live in Peace. We live happily together with our families. We should be proud of our grandfather`s victory. We should be grateful for all those people, who paid for Victory with their blood and very often with their lives. It is thanks to their heroism that we are able to live today and create the present and the future of our country.

War is a terrible word. How many people were lost! Millions and millions

Requiem” -«

Remember!

In centuries,

In years – remember!

About those,

Who has never come,

Remember!

Do not cry

! In a throat, you must restrain groans,

Bitter groans.

Be worthy of heroes! Be eternally worthy!

(A minute of silence) метроном

Victory Day is a symbol of a national pride, glory. It consolidates and joins everybody today. In our country Victory day is celebrated by all people in every city, town, village, because it brought peace not only for the Soviet People but for the people of many European countries.! We must remember the Great Patriotic War and its heroes, honor the memory of those who gave their lives for the freedom.

— And today we see that our people are still capable of repeating the feat of unity, brotherhood and duty, which became the main meaning of the Great Patriotic War, which ended more than half a century ago.

The Day of Victory, like an ember in the fire,

Seemed so distant,

but remained our hearts’ desire.

Miles behind us, scorched and battered

there we stood,

Bringing victory as closer as we could

That’s our Day of Victory

Ringing through the skies

Proud and joyful

We have bought it for a price

There is gladness

But with sadness in our eyes.

The Day of Victory!

The Day of Victory!

The Day of Victory!

Plants and factories

kept on working day and night

On the home front we’ve put up a valiant fight

Without respite toiling for the common good

Bringing victory as closer as we could

That’s our Day of Victory

Ringing through the skies

Proud and joyful

We have bought it for a price

There is gladness

But with sadness in our eyes.

The Day of Victory!

The Day of Victory!

The Day of Victory!

Come now, mother. I have made it back to you…

I feel like running barefoot in the morning dew.

Miles behind us, we’ve lost many souls for good

Bringing victory as closer as we could

That’s our Day of Victory

Ringing through the skies

Proud and joyful

We have bought it for a price

There is gladness

But with sadness in our eyes.

The Day of Victory!

The Day of Victory!

The Day of Victory!
