Ученик 1: Early years Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His father was a successful surgeon and his mother a writer of verse and prose. Wilde was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. While at Oxford, Wilde became one of the most famous personalities of the day: he wore his hair long, decorated his room with different beautiful things. His witty sayings were well known among the students. After he graduated, he moved to London to continue a literary career. Ученик 3: First works A first volume of Wilde’s poetry was published in 1881 but he also wrote fairy stories and published a novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” in 1891. His greatest talent was for writing plays, and he produced a string of extremely popular comedies including “An Ideal Husband” and “The Importance of Being Earnest”. Ученик 2: Personality Oscar Wilde attracted the attention of his audiences by the brilliance of his conversation, his knowledge, and the force of his personality. He admired unselfishness, kindness and generosity in “The Happy Prince”, “The Nightingale and the Rose” and despised egoism and greed in “The Selfish Giant”. THE SELFISH GIANT by Oscar Wilde

SLIDE 1: THE GARDEN and a Castle
Storyteller: Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.
Child 1: It’s a large lovely garden.
Child 2: The green grass is so soft!
Child 3: The beautiful flowers are like stars.
Child 4: The birds in the trees are singing so sweetly!
Children: How happy we are here!
The Giant: How good it’s to be back home! I visited my friend and stayed with him for seven years. I’ve said all that he had to say. I’m so happy to return to my own castle.
The Giant sees the children playing in his garden.
The Giant: What are you doing here?
and the children ran away.
The Giant: My own garden is my own garden! Anyone can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself. I’m a very Selfish Giant!
So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.
SLIDE 2: A SIGN “No children in the garden!”
Child 1: We have now nowhere to play. The road is very dusty and full of hard stones.
Child 2: How happy we were there, in the garden!
Storyteller: Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little
blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it
was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no
children, and the trees forgot to blossom.
The only people who were pleased were the Snow,
the Frost and the North Wind.
SLIDE 3: WINTER GARDEN. Sound: The Wind
The North Wind: Spring has forgotten this garden, so I will
live here all the year round. The Snow covered up the grass with her
great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. This is a delightful spot! We must ask the Hail on a
visit. We can run round and round the garden as fast as we can go.
DANCING WITH A RIBBON
The Giant: I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming. My garden is so cold and white; I hope there will be a change in the weather.
The North Wind: The Giant is too selfish. The Spring will never come, nor the Summer. The Autumn will not give golden fruit
to this garden. It is always Winter here, and I will dance about through the
trees.
MUSIC: Bird singing
The Giant: I hear some lovely music. It sounds so sweet. It is the most beautiful music in the world. I believe the Spring has come at last.
The North Wind disappears.
SLIDE 4 = SLIDE 1
The children crept in, they are sitting in the branches of the
trees. In the farthest corner of the garden a little boy was standing. He can’t climb the tree.
The Giant: How selfish I have been! Now I know why the Spring would not come here. I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children’s playground forever and ever. I’m really very sorry for what I have done.
The Giant: It is your garden now, little children.
The Children are playing (song/ dance)
Song “Good bye, Winter! Hello, Spring!” поют ученики 2 класса
The Giant: But where is your little companion? The boy I put into the
tree.
Child 1: We don’t know, he has gone away.
Child 2: We don’t know where he lives. We’ve never seen him before.
Storyteller: Years went over, and the Giant grew very old. He could not
play any more. One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep, and that the flowers were resting.
The Giant sees his little friend and ran to him.
The Giant: Who dared to wound you!? Tell me, that I might
take my big sword and kill him.
CHILD 3: These are the wounds of Love.
The Giant: Who are you, little child.
CHILD 3: You let me play once in your garden, today you will come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.”
The Giant: I have many beautiful flowers, but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all.
Beautiful music (Song “Good bye, Winter! Hello, Spring!”) фоном
