«In The World of Mark Twain’s Humour»
Цели:
- Познакомить учащихся с творчеством Марка Твена.
- Активизировать познавательную деятельность учащихся, дать им возможность оценить свой уровень владения английским языком, применить знания и умения в новой ситуации.
- Развивать интерес к американской литературе.
Оборудование:
— Портрет Марка Твена.
— Презентация.
— Декорации к инсценировкам.
Ход мероприятия:
Teacher: Good morning everybody! I am very glad to greet you! We gathered together today to remember Mark Twain and his characters.
Mark Twain (1835 – 1910)
Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens, was born in 1835 in the small town of Hannibal on the Mississippi River. He was the son of a lawyer.
Little Samuel spent his childhood in his native town. He was a bright, lively boy. He went fishing and swimming to the river and he was the leader in all the boy’s games.
Samuel had a lot of friends at school. And when he became a writer he described them in his stories.
When Samuel was eleven years old, his father died, leaving his wife and four children with nothing. And the boy had to leave school and look for work. He learned the profession of a printer. For some years Samuel worked as a printer for the town newspaper and later for his elder brother, who at that time started a small newspaper of his own. The two young men published it themselves. Samuel wrote short humorous stories and printed them in their newspaper.
When Samuel was a boy, he dreamed of becoming a sailor. At the age of 20 he found a job on a ship traveling up and down the Mississippi.
Here on a ship he “found” his pen-name “Mark Twain”. It was taken from the call of the Mississippi pilots when they measured the depth of the river.
Many steamboats moved up and down the river carrying all kinds of people — rich and poor , farmers and businessmen , slave owners and slaves. Thus, Samuel Clemens saw America passing before his eyes. This work gave him the opportunity to get to know a great deal about life. He worked as a pilot for more than four years.
Later he used to speak about this time as the happiest period of his life and described it in his book “Life on the Mississippi’’
Then the young man worked with the goldminers in California for a year. Here he began to write stories about camp life and sent them to newspapers under the name of Mark Twain.
The many professions that he tried gave Mark Twain a knowledge of life and people and helped him to find his true calling – that American satirical and critical literature began with Mark Twain.
In 1876 he published “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and eight years later “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. Children and grownups all over the world now know these two novels.
Writing did not bring much money to Mark Twain, so he had to give lectures on literature and read his stories to the public. He visited many countries and lived in England for a long time. In 1907 Oxford University gave Mark Twain an honorary doctorate of letters (почтительный доктор наук).

Но Клеменс не мог оставаться долго на одном месте. Он хотел всё увидеть и всё узнать. Через несколько лет мы встретим его на окраине страны, в Калифорнии, среди золотоискателей. Это была суровая жизнь, полная неожиданностей и ярких впечатлений.
Здесь наступил великий переворот в судьбе Сэма: он стал писателем. Сидя у костров после трудового дня, золотоискатели любили рассказывать смешные и задорные истории. Одну из таких историй Клеменс решил записать и напечатать в местной газете. Это был рассказ о Джиме Смайли и его дрессированной лягушке. Под пером Клеменса незамысловатый рассказ превратился в маленькое чудо веселья и остроумия. Стало ясно, что молодой золотоискатель одарен большим писательским талантом. Его пригласили сотрудничать в газете. Тогда же родилось его новое имя — Марк Твен. Мало кому из тех, кто читал очерки и рассказы нового писателя, было известно, что “марк твен” — старое выражение судоводителей, привезенное Клеменсом с Миссисипи. “Марк твен!” — (мерка два) кричит матрос, вытащив из воды лот и убедившись, что глубина реки достаточна для прохождения судов.
Учитель: Конечно, английский язык известен не всем. Но язык театра — это международный язык.

Может быть, нам уже строит козни Индеец Джо или принц хочет пригласить нас во дворец? А сейчас мы с вами заглянем в витрину книжного магазина.

Сцена № 1
Ведущий: Девочка подходит к прилавку с книгами, где стоит Продавец.
Girl: Hello! Is this a book – shop?
Book – seller: Yes, it is, and I’m a book – seller. What can I do for you?
Girl: Have you got a book by Mark Twain? I’d like to buy it.
Book – seller: I’m sorry, little girl, but I have no Mark Twain today. I have Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev and others.
Girl: But Mummy says that book- sellers always have Mark Twain’s books.
Book – seller: I told you that I have no books by Mark Twain today, little girl.
Girl: But Mummy says that book- sellers always have Mark Twain’s books. Here is the money for a book by Mark Twain.
Book – seller: Little girl, I have no books by Mark Twain!
Girl: But Mummy says that book- sellers always have Mark Twain’s books.
Book – seller: Go away, little girl!
Girl: But Mummy says that book- sellers always have Mark Twain’s books.
Book – seller: I tell you, go away, little girl!
Девочка убегает.
Ведущий: Не плачь, девочка. Конечно, жаль, что тебе не удалось купить книгу Марка Твена. Но, я думаю, тебе будет интересно познакомиться с его героями наяву и побольше узнать о них.
- Сцена № 2
Ведущий: Итак, мы приближаемся к цели нашего путешествия. Сейчас нам предстоит знакомство с населением этого города. Вспомните, пожалуйста, и скажите, кто кормит городское население Америки?
Конечно же , фермеры. Давайте с Марком Твеном заглянем на одну из ферм.
And now listen to a story by Mark Twain.
Story – teller: Once upon a time, a very long time ago, there lived a young Farmer (выходит фермер) with his old father and mother (под руку выходят родители) and his wife (выходит жена). They didn’t know anything about many things which we have in our houses today. They were very poor, so once the young man decided to go and look for work (На плече у фермера рюкзак, родные провожают его). He was lucky and after a time he came home with rich presents for everybody. (Входят фермер с сумкой и его родственники. Фермер всех обнимает и достает из сумки подарки).
Young farmer: Here is a present for you, Mother (дает шаль). And this is for you, Father (дает шапку). This is for you, my dear wife. (дает шелковое платье)
Mother: Thank you, my dear son!
Father: Thank you, my dear son!
Wife; Thank you, my dear husband!
Mother: Now, let’s go and have dinner.
(Все уходят, коробка остается на столе)
Входит жена.
Wife: I am so happy! And what else is there in this box? My husband says he has some more presents for us.
(Открывает коробку, достает вещи и вдруг отступает в ужасе)
Oh, good Heavens! My husband has brought a beautiful girl! He does not love me any more!
(Плачет)
Входит отец.
Father: Now,now, don’t cry. Perhaps you’re wrong. Let me have a look at that girl. (смотрит в коробку). But there is no girl here at all! It’s a man in the box! Not very young, but quite strong and handsome. Stop crying, my dear!
(Успокаивает ее)
Входит мать.
Mother: What has happened here? My daughter, why are your eyes so red? Were you crying?
Father: Yes, she was, but for no reason. Our son has brought a handsome old man with him, and our daughter thought it was a girl. Ha-ha-ha!
Mother: A man? What man? Where?
Father: Here, in this box.
Mother: Let me see him.(смотрит в коробку) Oh, but it isn’t a man! It is an old and a rather ugly woman!
Father: Woman? Let me look again! (Смотрит в коробку) A man, of course, it’s a man!
Mother: Let me see!(Смотрит) A woman! Do you think I can’t tell a man from a woman?
“It’s a man!”
“It’s a woman!”
Wife: Let me look now!
(Начинает плакать).
Oh, you are wrong! It’s a girl, so young and beautiful! Oh, dear!
(Входит фермер)
Young farmer:What’s all this noise about?
(Они спорят)
- A handsome man!
- An ugly old woman!
- A pretty young girl!
Young farmer: Oh, I see what it is.(Вытаскивает зеркало). Oh, you silly people! It’s a looking glass.
You each saw yourself in it.
It’s like a piece of glass
But more valuable for us
We shall need it now and then
For a woman, for a man.
Mother: We must have it here and there.
Father: When we shave or do our hair.
Wife: Man or wife or baby small-
Our glass reflects them all!
All: Don’t cry, don’t make a fuss. Now we have a looking – glass!
Марк Твен был неистощимым выдумщиком, мастером розыгрыша, верил, что “против смеха ничто не устоит”.
Вся американская литература вышла из одной книги Марка Твена, из его Гекльберри Финна.

Scene 1
Aunt Polly: Tom! Tom! Where is that boy? Where are you, Tom?
Tom: Here I am.
Aunt Polly: Oh, you’ve been in that closet. What were you doing there?
Tom: Nothing.
Aunt Polly: Nothing! Look at your hands. (Tom looks at his hands.) And look at your mouth. What is that?
Tom: I don’t know, Aunt.
Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It’s jam, that’s what it is. (Pointing to a switch on the floor) Hand me that switch!
Tom: Oh, look behind you, Aunt! Aunt Polly looks behind her. Tom runs away. Aunt stands surprised, then she breaks into a laugh and goes away.
Teacher: Tom liked the adventures very much but he didn’t like to go to school. We have a little story about Tom and about school for you.
Scene I I
Tom and Sid are in their beds. It is morning and time to get up. Tom doesn’t want to go to school. He wants to be ill. Then he could stay at home.
Tom: oh, Sid, Sid!
Sid: What’s the matter, Tom?
Tom: Oh, Sid! I am dying. I forgive you everything, Sid. When I am dead… (Groans.)
Sid: Oh, Tom, you are not dying! Don’t!
Tom: I am not angry with Aunt Polly. Tell her so. And, Sid, give my cat with one eye to the new girl at school and tell her…
Sid runs away. A minute later Sid and Aunt Polly come in.
Sid: Oh, Aunt Polly, Tom is dying.
Aunt Polly: Dying?
Sid: Yes.
Aunt Polly: Tom, what has happened to you, my boy?
Tom: Oh, Auntie, look at my right hand! It is red and hot.
Aunt Polly: Oh, Tom, stop that nonsense and get up!
Tom stops groaning. He feels a little foolish.
Tom: Oh, Auntie, it so hot that I’ve forgotten about my tooth.
Aunt Polly: Your tooth! And what has happened to your tooth?
Tom: It’s loose and aches terribly.
Aunt Polly: Open your mouth. Well, you are right. Your tooth is loose. Sid, bring me some thread.
Tom: Oh, please, Auntie, don’t pull it out. It’s all right now.
Sid brings the thread. Aunt Polly ties one end of the thread to Tom’s tooth and the other to the bed. Then she suddenly claps her hands before Tom’s face. Tom falls back. The tooth hands on the thread.
Tom: Oh! oh!( He covers his mouth with his hands.) Oh! My tooth was all right. But I didn’t want to go to school.
Aunt Polly: Oh, Tom, so all this is because you don’t want to go to school! You want to go fishing. Tom, Tom, I love you so dearly, and you… Now get up quickly and get ready to go to school!

Марк Твен, на мой взгляд, был одним из самых талантливых писателей прошлого столетия. Он оставил людям более 20 книг и огромное количество неопубликованных рукописей. “Я ещё не знаком с XX веком. Я желаю ему удачи”,- писал Твен. Знал ли он, что сам станет одной из величайших удач теперь уже XX века? А его слова: “Мир, счастье, братство людей – вот, что нужно нам на этом свете”,- будут современны и своевременны.
